I had the absolute pleasure of meeting shoe designer Shola Yusuf with Shola Designs not too long ago. This wonderful woman graciously allowed me to interview her inside her lovely home. She by far has one of the most inspiring stories I have ever heard from a designer.
Shola moved from Lagos, Nigeria to New York in 1989 with less than $100 and worked security jobs as she attended pharmacy school. You know what they say about New York- if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Long story short, Shola now resides in Tampa, owns four pharmacies, and is doing what she loves- creating. When I asked her what made her want to become a shoe designer, she explained to me that she was involved in a car accident in New York in 2009 and had just bought her first pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. Shola was the only one who was able to speak when the medics arrived.
When the medics informed her that her femur bone was broken, all she could ask about were her shoes. Shola endured FIVE hours of surgery, and all she could think about was how she was going to wear heels again! If that isn’t true passion, then I don’t know what is. Take a look at the video below to meet Shola, view her shoe designs, and learn about her first official upcoming trunk show on April 5, 2014.
For every shoe purchased, $5.00 is donated to The Water Project, supporting water accessibility in African communities.
Special thanks to Farrah of Estrella Fashion Report for introducing me to Shola! As mentioned in the video Farrah will be hosting Shola’s trunk show. Be sure to check out the Estrella Fashion Report blog!
